CPAF partners with high schools to implement healthy relationship workshops for students through their classes, clubs, and/or after school or other programs. CPAF also partners with youth-serving community-based organizations to implement these workshops. Finally, CPAF offers virtual/hybrid cohort-style programs open to any youth ages 13-18 in Los Angeles County (see below for program descriptions). Through these workshops and youth programs, CPAF facilitates safe and empowering spaces for honest and open conversations around cultural identity, dating violence, sexual violence, and addressing the root causes of violence by building skills of empathy, communication, peer advocacy, leadership, and community mobilization.
While facilitating parent support groups have been part of CPAF’s shelter programs for a long time, CPAF expanded this work in 2019 to engage parents in the community. CPAF engages parents, guardians, and other adults, to explore topics of parenting and working with youth through a lens that breaks the cycle of violence by shifting from a “power-over” to a “power-with” practice.
CPAF also provides training to adults currently working with parents and primary child caretakers. Please see our Training of Trainers description here (preview only).
API Youth Forum is a platform for youth to exchange ideas and resources to prevent sexual violence and promote healthy relationships and communities by exploring various tools and techniques in the practice of social change, as well as strengthen adult allyship and youth-adult partnership/power-with opportunities. Since 2015, CPAF has hosted this annual summertime event, uplifting youth voices and inspiring connection amongst the API youth community. CPAF also co-hosts this event with partner API youth-serving agencies in LA County and invites adults to the event as allies and partners in violence prevention work alongside youth. Each year, CPAF brings together a planning committee of both youth and adults to determine the theme and event program. Find out more below!
Information on this year’s API YF: Honoring Roots, Shaping Tomorrow – 10th Anniversary Celebration
Youth ages 13-18 are invited to sign up for this program to explore their identity, build healthier relationships, and learn about root causes of violence in the API community. Know Your Roots (KYR) is a cohort-style program that promotes peer learning and social connection. Youth who complete Know Your Roots will have the chance to develop their own social impact initiative and receive mentorship through our Rooted Leadership Project Program.
Youth who have completed Know Your Roots or a similar foundational program are invited to apply for the Rooted Leadership Project (RLP). Participants will design, implement, and evaluate a project that promotes nonviolence in the API community. RLP leaders will be paired with experienced mentors who will support them in the process of developing their projects, implementing a community assessment, and creating recommendations. See past participant’s nonviolence projects here: Rooted Leaders Digital Portfolios — CPAF
Participants are eligible for high school volunteer hours. CPAF will also provide each RLP participant with a personalized letter of recognition from our Executive Director and opportunities to continue advocating for nonviolence in our communities!
